EDISON defeated Fountain Valley 75-49 in the Sunset League boys’ basketball opener Friday.

It was almost over as soon as it began. Edison, the pre-league favorite to win the Sunset League boys’ basketball title, jumped out to a 17-7 first quarter lead and went on to a 75-49 victory over Fountain Valley Friday night in the league opener at the EHS gym.

Matt Serven scored 18 points to lead the Chargers, and Nate Matthews added another 13 in the win, which improved Edison’s overall mark to 12-3. The Barons got 11 points from Paul Vu and saw their record go to 8-8.

In another Sunset League opening night action Friday, Newport Harbor defeated Marina 52-51. The Vikings (2-15) trailed by nine going into the fourth quarter, but their furious rally fell just short. Jakob Alamudun scored 17 points to lead Marina scorers.

Also in Sunset action, Los Alamitos bested Huntington Beach (11-7) by a score of 59-42. The Oilers led by 12 at halftime, but were shut out 24-0 in the third quarter
