“STAR TREK BEYOND” opens this weekend.
Surfing, stage openings and sunny weather are the highlights of this weekend’s entertainment choices for the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area. Here’s a lot at some ways and places to have fun.
The annual Vans U.S. Open of Surfing begins Saturday at Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach at the city pier and thereabouts. It will continue through July 31 and will feature not just surfing, but also skateboarding and BMX bicycle riding/racing. There will be big crowds and crowds of traffic, so there will be shuttles to the downtown area each weekend.
MOVIES
Opening this week in local cinemas.
- “Star Trek Beyond.” The latest in the rebooted Trek series finds the Enterprise crashed and its crew stranded on a distant planet where they meet up with a warrior race. Starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. This science fiction film is rated PG-13.
- “Ice Age: Collision Course.” Another sequel in this animated film series about prehistoric critters. Voices include Ray Romano, Denis Leary and Queen Latifah. Rated PG.
- “Lights Out.” It’s a horror flick about a monster that only appears in the dark. So keep the lights on, OK? Rated PG-13.
ON STAGE
One play is closing, one continuing and one opening.
- “Hamlet” finishes its run at the Festival Amphitheater on Main Street in Garden Grove. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.
- “M*A*S*H” opens Friday at the Huntington Beach Playhouse (Goldenwest Street and Talbert Avenue). Shows are Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m. Performances are through Aug. 13.
- “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Coat” continues at the Rose Center Theater on All-American Way in Westminster with shows at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
