Police report on U.S. Open at council

A report on the 2016 Vans U.S. Open of Surfing event from a law enforcement perspective will top the agenda for Monday’s meeting of the Huntington Beach City Council.

Police Chief Rob Handy will make a presentation to the council on the eight-day combination of surfing, skateboarding and BMX bicycle riding competitions that took place in the city pier area July 23-31.

In years past, there had been disturbances, the worst being in 1986 and 2013. In that latter case, property damage and some arrests resulted from crowds leaving the contest area and flooding the downtown area of Main Street.

Law enforcement activities have been stepped up since then. The event, the biggest surfing competition in the United States, pumps an estimated $16.4 million into the Huntington Beach economy.

The council will meet in study session at 4 p.m. with the regular session commencing at 6 p.m. in its chambers at 2000 Main St. (at Yorktown Avenue).
