MOSQUITOES can carry the deadly West Nile virus.
Fighting mosquitoes and the diseases they can spread is becoming more urgent, as the number of adult mosquitoes that have tested positive for West Nile virus in 2016 has more than doubled in the past week.
According to the Orange County Health Care Agency, so far in 2016 a total of 113 samples have been collected in 22 Orange County cities, and the first instance of human West Nile infection locally has been reported.
The Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District, headquartered in Garden Grove, announced on Friday the following facts.
- One human infection in Anaheim.
- In Garden Grove, one infected dead bird, one positive mosquito sample with West Nile.
- In Huntington Beach, three dead birds and two mosquito samples.
- For Westminster, no incidents.
West Nile virus is potentially a crippling or fatal disease. The OCMVCD urges residents to:
- eliminate standing water around your house
- make sure all window and door screens on your house are in good repair
- wear an insect repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535.
