Edison, Marina win to go to 3-0

Two local high school football teams won Friday night to improve their records to 3-0 so far in 2016. Edison High, ranked number one by in the Orange County Tribune’s High Five for the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area, beat Canyon 38-19 and Marina, second ranked, defeated Westminster 24-20.

Here are Friday’s results.

The Chargers stayed unbeaten with this win at Fred Kelly Stadium. Griffin O’Conner threw for 179 yards and two scored for EHS. Jack Carmichael rushed for 102 yards. Shaun Colamonico caught two touchdowns and ended up with 102 yards receiving.

The Matadors went to 0-3 with the non-league loss to the Rebels at Glover Stadium.

Playing their home opener, the Aztecs (1-1) posted their first win of the 2016 season.

In a duel of adjacent schools, the Vikings pulled off the win at the Lion field. Trailing at one point by two touchdowns, MHS came back to pull off the victory. Blaine Riederich scored the winning tally late in the fourth quarter.  Josh Avila rushed for 131 yards and one score for the Lions. Noah Melbon passed for 68 yards and one score, and ran for another. Westminster fell to 0-2.

The Mariners (1-2) got their first win of the season against the Dolphins.

The Argonauts were upset in Irvine, losing to the previously winless Warriors. Joseph Camarillo was the standout for Grove (2-1) with 112 yards rushing on 19 carries.

The Oilers played tough against the Titans at Cap Sheue Field, but fell to 1-2 with the loss. HBHS trailed by 14 at one point, rallied, but couldn’t keep pace.

With the loss in Mission Viejo, the Barons fell to 0-3.

Steven Hernandez threw for one touchdown and ran for another as the Lobos (1-1) loss to the Centurions at Garden Grove Stadium. He finished with 154 yards rushing and 53 more through the air.
