Woman, dog hit by pickup truck

A WOMAN walking her dog was struck by a truck Thursday morning in Westminster.

An investigation is under way into an incident Thursday morning when a woman in Westminster walking her dog was struck by a truck. According to published reports, the incident took place around 7 a.m. at Trask Avenue and Descanso Drive.

The woman was hospitalized in grave condition and her dog taken to a veterinarian. The driver of the pickup truck that hit her stopped immediately and spoke to police, according to the Westminster Police Department. The woman, described only as “elderly,” was not immediately identified to the public.

CLOSING IN ON A CENTURY

Garden Grove High School turned 95 years old on Thursday. The school, founded as Garden Grove Union High School in 1921, is one of the oldest high schools in Orange County. Older schools are Anaheim, Brea Olinda, Fullerton, Orange and Santa Ana. The old GGUHSD was merged with the Alamitos and Garden Grove elementary school districts into the Garden Grove Unified School District in 1965. The school, located on Stanford Avenue, will celebrate its centennial in 2021.

LOOK OUT FOR PHONY “INSPECTORS”

Business owners in Huntington Beach are being warned to watch out for people posing as fire marshals demanding inspections and payment for that “work.” The police and fire departments have received reports of people wearing “official-looking clothing” entering businesses to inspect for fire safety.

The “marshals” give a report to the business operator and ask for a check or cash to be paid directly to him. The HBFD points out that inspections are done by uniformed personnel who wear badges and carry fire department identification cards. They do not ask for money or present an invoice.

WATCH OUT FOR THOSE WALKING

September is “California Pedestrian Safety Month” and the Garden Grove Police Department is making a special effort to increase public awareness of issues related to pedestrians. According to the GGPD, 813 pedestrians were killed in California in 2015. So far in 2016, there have been five fatal accidents involving pedestrians or bicyclists.

In response, the GGPD focused on this issue in August and issued over 300 citations for violations of traffic laws related to walkers and cyclists. Routine traffic patrols in September will focus efforts on trouble spots, with enforcement aimed both at motorists and pedestrians.
