A close game was a small, but significant victory for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Monday night at the Big A. The Halos defeated the Oakland A’s 2-1 and solidified their hold on fourth place in the American League West.
Jered Weaver retired the first 14 batters before leaving the game with tightness in his back. The win went to J.C. Ramirez (3-4), who pitched one inning, giving up one hit.
The series continues Tuesday with Ricky Nolasco (7-14) making the start for the Angels.
Chargers drop to second in grid poll

Boys’ water polo: Huntington Beach is third in Division 3, while Ocean View is second in Division 6. Unranked but receiving votes are Pacifica and Los Amigos.
Girls’ volleyball: In Division 1, Edison is third and Huntington Beach sixth. In Division 7, Garden Grove is ninth, while in Division 8, Orangewood Academy is ninth.
Cross country: Ocean View is tied for 10th in the Division 3 rankings for boys, while among girls, Fountain Valley is seventh in Division 1 and Bolsa Grande is eighth in Division 3.
