Angels edge Oakland; Edison is second

A close game was a small, but significant victory for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Monday night at the Big A. The Halos defeated the Oakland A’s 2-1 and solidified their hold on fourth place in the American League West.

Mike Trout hit his 29th home run of the season and Albert Pujols drove in what proved to be the winning run as the Angels improved their record to 70-87, which goes a long way toward making sure that it will be the A’s (67-89), not the Orange County team, which finishes 2016 in the cellar of the AL West.

Jered Weaver retired the first 14 batters before leaving the game with tightness in his back. The win went to J.C. Ramirez (3-4), who pitched one inning, giving up one hit.

The series continues Tuesday with Ricky Nolasco (7-14) making the start for the Angels.

Chargers drop to second in grid poll

Edison fell from the top spot in the CIF-SS Division 3 football poll released Monday, landing in second place. The Chargers, who lost 42-0 to the Division 1 number one team, Mater Dei, are 4-1. Unseating Edison is La Mirada (3-2),

In Division 7, Huntington Beach is rated 10th, and in Division 13, Orange is fifth. Unranked but receiving votes is Ocean View.

Boys’ water polo: Huntington Beach is third in Division 3, while Ocean View is second in Division 6. Unranked but receiving votes are Pacifica and Los Amigos.

Girls’ volleyball: In Division 1, Edison is third and Huntington Beach sixth. In Division 7, Garden Grove is ninth, while in Division 8, Orangewood Academy is ninth.

Cross country: Ocean View is tied for 10th in the Division 3 rankings for boys, while among girls, Fountain Valley is seventh in Division 1 and Bolsa Grande is eighth in Division 3.
