“The Accountant” and plays in play

A couple of interesting-looking films, lots of live theater and some other fun stuff on tap this weekend in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area.

MOVIES

Opening this weekend in area cinemas are:

• “The Accountant.” A math genius who helps criminals hide their money gets into a more dangerous aspect of the underworld. Starring Ben Affleck and Anna Kendrick. Rated R.
• “Kevin Hart: What Now?”: Comedian Kevin Hart goes back to his hometown of Philadelphia for a concert of stand-up comedy. Also appearing are Halle Berry and Don Cheadle. Rated R.

ON STAGE

• “Sweeney Todd: The Mad Barber of Fleet Street.” This wicked musical continues at the Gem Theater on Main Street in Garden Grove with performances Thursdays to Saturdays. For mature audiences.
• “A Murder Is Announced.” Mystery adapted from a story by Agatha Christie, “Murder” rcontinues at the Westminster Community Playhouse, 7272 Maple St. in Westminster. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. through Oct. 23.

•   “Waiting For Godot.” Samuel Beckett’s intriguing continues this weekend at the Mainstage Theater at Golden West College, 15744 Goldenwest St., Huntington Beach. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sundays.

ALSO

The classic film “Singing In the Rain” starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds will be screened at Strawberry Bowl (also known as the Festival Amphitheater) on Main Street in Garden Grove Friday at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for children.

• Garden Grove high school students, ages 13 to 17, are invited to attend a free “Fright Night” event, which features the movie “Insidious,” rated PG-13. This 4-D event takes place on Friday, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at Atlantis Play Center, in Garden Grove Park.
