TOM HANKS and Felicity Jones try to hold off a plague in “Inferno.”
MOVIES
Just one major release in local cinemas this week:
- “Inferno.” Tom Hanks is back – with a haircut – as Harvard smarty-pants Robert Langdon in another adaptation of a Dan Brown novel (“The DaVinci Code”). He and Dr. Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones) try to stop the unleashing of a plague. Rated PG-13 for violence and thematic elements.
- “To Kill A Mockingbird,” the classic film starring Gregory Peck, is being screened at the Festival Amphitheater (AKA Strawberry Bowl) on Main Street in Garden Grove at 8 p.m. on Friday. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for children.
ON STAGE
- “The Shape of Things.” Neil Labute’s thoughtful drama about love, mythology, art, God and more is at the Stage West Theater on the Golden West College campus Friday through Sunday. Tickets are $12 general admission, $10 for students and seniors. Performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. At the GWC campus, 15744 Goldenwest St., Huntington Beach.
MUSIC
Flashback Heart Attack, a New Wave Eighties music show, will be on stage Saturday at 6:30 p.m. in the Festival Amphitheater (AKA Strawberry Bowl) on Main Street in Garden Grove. Tickets are $15 general admission, $20 at the door.
EVENTS
Halloween … originally All Hallow’s Eve … may be on Tuesday, but there are some scary events scheduled for this weekend. Many schools are churches have events for Halloween or harvest festivals, but here are some more public events.
- Pumpkin Carving & Costume Contest: It’s at the Huntington Beach City Gym and Pool (1600 Palm Ave.) on Saturday from 6-8 p.m. Admission is $15 per family (price includes one pumpkin and a carving kit). Additional pumpkins are $5 each.
- 15th annual Jack O’Lantern Jamboree on Friday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m at Atlantis Play Center, 13630 Atlantis Way in Garden Grove. Spooky train ride, carnival games, crafts, bounce house, etc. Tickets are $8 (children 2 and under are free) and admission is limited to the first 300 kids.
- Halloween Happening at Westminster Mall. Monday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Children ages 2 to 12 can trick-or-treat at participating stores, and play nickel carnival games at the lower level, Macy’s wing. Families are invited to be in costume, but children 12 and older, and adults, may not wear masks.
