BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH stars in “Doctor Strange.”
This being the week leading up to Election Day, you’d think we could all use a lot of diversion, but, alas, there’s not a lot of new stuff to entertain in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area. Here’s what we found:
Opening this weekend in local cinemas.
- “Doctor Strange.” Another Marvel hero, this time a magical one. Benedict Cumberbatch plays a neurosurgeon turned sorcerer in this special effects-action extravaganza. Rated PG-13.
- “Hacksaw Ridge.” This is another Mel Gibson bloodfest, this one – perhaps ironically – based on the true story of a soldier in World War II (played by Andrew Garfield) who refuses to carry a rifle but serves as an heroic medic at Okinawa. Rated R for realistic blood and gore.
- “Trolls.” Animated tale of how candy-colored trolls are about to become dessert. Voices by Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake. Rated PG-13 for high caloric content.
ON STAGE
Opening this week at the Huntington Beach Playhouse is a live action version of “Gem Smart,” the Sixties TV spy spoof. Shows are Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturdays at 2 and 8 p.m. Runs through Nov. 19. The HBP s located in the Central Library building at Talbert Street and Goldenwest Street in Huntington Beach.
