Golden West College’s football team saw its three-game winning streak come to a halt Saturday as the Rustlers were beaten 40-28 by Grossmont College at LeBard Stadium in Costa Mesa.

GWC fell behind early, trailing 27-7 at one point and but briefly regained the lead. The Huntington Beach team saw its record drop to 4-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Adam Vance was again the star for the green-and-gold, passing for 347 yards and three touchdowns, but was intercepted four times.

The Rustlers went ahead 7-0 when Zimari Manning caught a 23-yard pass for a touchdown early in the first quarter, but Grossmont scored the next four TDs to built a lead.

GWC rallied with three scores of its own to draw into the lead at 28-27 on Desmond Bowden’s 2-yard run at the 11:21 mark of the fourth quarter. But then Grossmont pulled away with two scores to seal the win.

The Rustlers will close out their regular season schedule on Saturday, Nov. 12 against Fullerton at the Nathan Shapell Stadium on the Yorba Linda High campus.

In other area community college football results, Fullerton defeated Orange Coast 35-14 and Santa Ana defeated West Los Angeles College 52-28. The Hornets’ win was their fourth straight after losing their first five games.

PANTHERS FALL TO CLAREMONT, 17-6

The Chapman University football team lost 17-6 to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College Saturday to see its overall record fall to 4-4. The Panthers record in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference went to 3-3.

Only two field goals by Lucas Alfonso kept the Panthers from being shut out. He booted three-pointers from 38 and 30 yards in the loss. Chapman only managed eight first downs in the game and converted just one of 11 third-down plays.

Chapman will close out its season on Nov. 12 with a SCIAC game at home against Occidental College at 1 p.m.
