JUST TWO of five local schools won their CIF-SS first round games Friday night.
Just two of five prep football teams from the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area survived first round CIF-SS playoff games Friday and advanced to the quarter-finals.
- Division 3: Edison 49, Newbury Park 24. Griffin O’Connor threw for four touchdowns and ran for three scores in the Chargers’ win. He finished with 245 yards rushing, and Jack Carmichael ran for 108 more. The Chargers (10-1) will face Buena Park next in the quarterfinals.
- Division 7: Tustin 42, Huntington Beach 27: The Oilers finished their season at 4-7 after the loss at Tustin High. Derek Thomas rushed for 126 yards for HBHS; Arick McLawyer passed for 104 yards and ran for 73 more.
- Division 10: Pasadena Poly 23, Pacifica 15: Ben Jefferson was a star in defeat as he helped rally the Mariners (6-5) against the Panthers. He threw for a 79-yard score, then a 48-yard touchdown, followed by the two-point conversion in the fourth quarter to cut into a 23-0 deficit.
- Division 11: Katella 47, Westminster 39: A fourth quarter rally by the Lions wasn’t quite enough as they fell to the Knights. Josh Avila ran for 152 yards and two scores, and Noah Melbom passed for 165 yards as Westminster finished the season with a 5-6 mark.
Rancho Alamitos 41, Heritage Christian 31: Blake Culbert threw four touchdown passes to Jesse Candelario as the Vaqueros advanced to the quarterfinal round. Culbert also ran for 57 more yards. Rancho (7-4) will play Valley View High of Moreno Valley next.
