LED streetlights coming to GG?

The streetlights in Garden Grove may be getting brighter, cheaper and better-looking. A proposal to convert the city’s Edison-owned street lights from high-pressure sodium to LED (light-emitting diode) will be considered Tuesday by the city council.

Making the conversion would save the city about $40,000 annually in energy costs over a 20-year period, according to Southern California Edison. The city would get a one-time $500,000 “energy efficiency” incentive to make the change, which would likely occur in 2017 to 2018.

LED lighting is gaining in popularity and use because they consume less energy, last longer, are of smaller size and are often perceived as being brighter and more appealing. They are increasingly being used in automobile headlamps, traffic signals and camera flashes.

Also on the agenda is discussion of a joint resolution by the city and the Garden Grove Unified School District proposed by Mayor Bao Nguyen “regarding potential effects of the recent election.”

The council will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Meeting Center, 11300 Stanford Ave.
