Be wary of a college tuition scam

HUNTINGTON BEACH police are warning residents of a scam involving door-to-door solicitation for college tuition help.

Huntington Beach police are alerting members of the public to a scam being reported to them. According to the HBPD, it involves two men apparently posing as father and son going door-to-door and soliciting money for the younger man’s college tuition.

Police say that the pair is going door to door asking for money so the “son” can pay for UEI College, a trade and technical school. One resident made out a check to “Michael Crawford” and that check’s banking information, routing and account numbers were used to forge copies of the check, which were cashed.

Police caution residents to be wary of any door-to-door soliciting. The law requires that they have a business license issued by the City of Huntington Beach to solicit for any goods, money or services. If you suspect the legality of a solicitor, call (714) 960-8811.
