League championships have been crowned for high school basketball teams after Thursday night’s final regular season games. Among squads in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area, boys’ conference titles were won by Edison in the Sunset League (a tie with Los Alamitos), Bolsa Grande in the Garden Grove League and Ocean View in the Golden West League.

On the girls’ side, new champions are Garden Grove and La Quinta tied for the Garden Grove League crown, with Huntington Beach and Los Alamitos tied for the Sunset title and Orangewood Academy sharing the San Joaquin League honors with Fairmont Prep of Anaheim.

While most of Thursday’s games were a bit anticlimactic, two Garden Grove League contests were crucial and one Golden West League game as well. Bolsa Grande, which had secured no worse than a tie for the GGL title earlier in the week, got the crown outright by defeating Santiago 60-52. Derek Tran scored 15 for the Matadors (9-1 in league, 20-6 overall) and Chris Robertson had 15 for the Cavaliers (7-3, 16-10).

Edison wrapped up its share of the boys’ Sunset championship with a 64-40 win over Marina. Jakob Alamunden scored 19 to lead the Chargers.

In girls’ competition, Garden Grove bested La Quinta 38-33 to force a tie for the GGL title. Kina Tauaiki was the woman of the hour for the Argos with 21 points. Grove finished with a 7-3 league mark (18-9 overall) while La Quinta was 7-3 and 17-8.

Segerstrom’s 64-59 win over Ocean View allowed the Jaguars to claim the honors at 9-1 (21-5 overall), with the Seahawks in second at 8-2 and 17-5.
