A RESOLUTION on the status of students “regardless of their immigration status” was approved at Tuesday’s meeting of the Garden Grove Unified School District Board of Education,
Against the backdrop of announced increased immigration enforcement and deportation by the federal government, the Garden Grove Unified School District Board of Education on Tuesday approved a resolution promising that campus schools would remain “a safe and welcoming place for all students and their families, regardless of nation of origin or immigration status.”
The board approved the resolution unanimously.
On Tuesday, the Trump administration unveiled its new policies on immigration laws, directing federal agencies to find, arrest and deport those persons in the United States illegally if they have committed any legal offenses, including misdemeanors.
The Obama administration focused its deportation efforts on those involved in felony cases.
“The faithful execution of our immigration laws is best achieved by using all these statutory authorities to the greatest extent practicable,” John F. Kelly, the secretary of homeland security, wrote Tuesday.
The new policy does not affect “Dreamers,” people who entered the country illegally as minors. Under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy implemented in 2012, such “Dreamers” can apply for renewable two-year deferrals of action on possible deportation.
According to Kidsdata.org, 54 percent of enrollment in the GGUSD in 2016 was Hispanic/Latino. While not all unauthorized persons in the U.S. are of those ethnic categories, the Trump administration has emphasized immigration from Mexico and Latin America.
The GGUSD serves most of Garden Grove, as well as portions of Anaheim, Cypress, Fountain Valley, Santa Ana, Stanton and Westminster.
