“CHIPS” off the old block in cinemas

“POWER RANGERS” is back, but this time as a live action film.

Unless you find politics entertaining, it might be a somewhat lean weekend for thrill-seekers in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area. Here’s our look at amusing possibilities for Friday through Sunday.

MOVIES

Opening in local theaters this weekend include a couple of retreads from the tube. “CHIPS” is an action-adventure-comedy based on the old TV show about the California Highway Patrol, opens on Friday. Also opening Friday will be “Power Rangers,” a live-action version of the former kids TV cartoon show.

ON STAGE

Live drama and music in the area includes the opening of “The Laramie Project” at the Westminster Community Playhouse, the story of a Wyoming college student fatally beaten because he was gay. Also, two more performances of “Always Patsy Cline” have been added for Saturday (8 p.m.) and Sunday (3 p.m.) at the Gem Theater in Garden Grove.

EVENTS

A rally and march supporting President Donald Trump is set for Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington Beach on Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. Officially, it’s the “Southern California Make America Great Again March.” Expect counter-protestors.
