Police hunt for DUIs on Cinco de Mayo

LOCAL POLICE are on the lookout for drunk and drugged driving this Cinco de Mayo weekend.

You’d best not have a fifth with you on the Fifth. Cinco de Mayo, that is.

That holiday observance of the 1862 victory of Mexican forces over an invading French army at the Battle of Puebla has become a deadly time due to drunk and drugged driving. Forty people were killed across the nation in 2015 during the Cinco de Mayo period due to impaired driving.

In response, police in Garden Grove, Huntington Beach and other area cities are deploying additional resources, including DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols this weekend.

Drivers are reminded that “driving under the influence” doesn’t just mean the use of alcohol. It also includes driving under the influence of certain prescription drugs or marijuana.

Sober motorists are reminded that when they spot someone driving erratically they should call 9-1-1 to report a potential drunk driver before tragedy results.
