El Dorado High’s Golden Hawks pulled off the high school baseball upset of the year Friday as they defeated Huntington Beach High 4-1 in a CIF-SS Division 1 quarterfinal game at the Oiler field.
An overflow crowd saw the orange-and-black – ranked number one in the division and already the unofficial “state champion” after winning the prestigious Boras Classic tournament earlier this year – get knocked out of the playoffs.
The contest was a scoreless tie until the team from Placentia got on the board with a home run in the top of the sixth off Oiler starter Hagen Danner. A bloop single with the bases loaded gave El Dorado two more runs.
The Oilers finish their season 27-5 with a Sunset League title under their belt. The Golden Hawks (21-8-1) will face Corona in a semifinal game on Tuesday.
In Division 2, Edison lost is quarterfinal contest to Palm Desert 3-2. The Chargers were led by Spencer Serven, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Riley Hadden made the start for EHS, working five innings and giving up three runs on seven hits. Edison finished the season with a 20-13 mark.
Softball quarterfinal action on Thursday saw Pacifica defeated by Norco 20-2 in Division 1 play. The Mariners, who came into the game ranked 23 in the state, lost to the Cougars, who are ranked number one in the state and the nation. They are 32-0 and the Mariners finished their 2017 campaign with a 22-8 mark.
