Mariners excel in track and field events

SOPHIA HARTWELL has excelled in the long jump and triple jump for Pacifica.

Jacob Smith of Pacifica High School will be competing in the state CIF Qualifying Track and Field Event in Clovis on June 2. If he qualifies based on time or place, he will go on to the championships on June 3.

On Friday evening, he competed in the 1600-meter Masters Race at Arcadia High School, taking sixth place out of 12 runners with a time of 4:13.84. That breaks his own school record of 4:17 he set recently.

JACOB SMITH of Pacifica High School will compete this week in the state track and field qualifying event on Saturday.

Smith has been named 2016-17 Empire League Male Athlete of the Year by the Orange County Athletic Directors Association. He was honored on Tuesday at an award dinner at the Anaheim Convention Center.

He’s not the only Mariner athlete doing will this spring in track. PHS had nine athletes who advanced to the CIF-SS Track and Field Preliminaries out of the Empire League finals.

At the Division 3 prelims held at Estancia High in Costa Mesa, Rylee Waterworth competed in the girls’ triple jump and Sophia Hartwell in the long jump and triple jump. The boys were represented by Smith (1600-meter and 3200-meter), Ben Jefferson (100-meter and long jump), Zach Chung (200-meter), Eduardo Orozco (110-meter hurdles) and James Deras (triple jump).

The PHS 4×100-meter relay team of Kinte Hogan, Chung, Jefferson and Jack Roepke also competed in the prelims.

Hartwell and Smith advanced to the Division 3 finals in the triple jump and 1600-meter and 3200-meter events, respectively.

  1. Very proud of Jake Smith for his accomplishments, but I did want to make one correction in the article. Jake was named Empire League Male Athlete of the Year and subsequently up for the honor of OC Athlete of the Year. He did not win that title, an athlete from St. John Bosco won. 🙂 Thank you for recognizing Jake’s accomplishments. We are very proud of him!!!
