College-bound kids getting kudos

The Garden Grove Unified School District celebrated its college-bound students this week with a new website that highlights photos of graduating seniors along with their college and career plans.  The website, www.ggusd.us/collegesigningday/, features College Signing Day events held at the district’s seven comprehensive high schools over the past month.

“Graduation is right around the corner and we want our students to know how proud we are of all they have accomplished so far and all they will achieve in the future,” said Teri Rocco, board of education member.

Later in June, the GGUSD will graduate approximately 3,400 students in the Class of 2017.  The College Signing Day website is a picture of the district’s commitment to equipping students for lifelong success, which is goal three of GGUSD’s strategic plan.

STRAWBERRY CONTEST WINNERS CROWNED

Winners of four contests recently held at the 59th annual Garden Grove Strawberry Festival received trophies and applause at the Festival Amphitheater.

Trophies were presented by Miss Outstanding Teen Hannah Archer, Miss Garden Grove Missy Mendoza and others in her court.  Trophies were awarded in multiple categories for each contest.

TINY TOTS KING TINY TOTS KING AND QUEEN CONTEST: Miss Outstanding Teen Hannah Archerand Miss Garden Grove Missy Mendoza crowned contest winners five- year-old Isaiah Mwassa as Tiny Tots King and six-year-old Sawyer Alliss as Tiny Tots Queen.

BERRY, BERRY BEAUTIFUL BABY CONTEST: Young Gia Hendrick won the coveted Berry Berry Beautiful Baby title along with Best Hair in the three-month- to-one-year category.

REDHEAD ROUNDUP CONTEST: Crystal Nay of Costa Mesa is the overall winner of the 2017 Red Head Roundup.   She also won the Classy Red Head title before being named the overall winner.

STRAWBERRY IDOL KARAOKE CONTEST: Alyssa Springstead of Lake Forest won the Strawberry Idol karaoke title with her rendition of “Over the Rainbow.”  Alyssa Simmons took second and Marissa Macias won third place.

The four contests are held annually as part of the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival.  Winners are chosen by a panel festival board members and local citizens.  Each winner received a trophy.

SEASONAL SHUTTLE SERVICE FOR SURF CITY

A seasonal spring to summer shuttle service connecting the city’s beachfront with inland locations tops the agenda for Monday’s meeting of the Huntington Beach City Council.

Before the council will be a two-year agreement with Transportation Concepts to operation the shuttle for a total amount not to exceed $380,000. Most of the funding comes from an Orange County Transportation Authority grant: the city’s of the expense is expected to be under $25,000.

As planned, the services would eventually start on weekends beginning in April with daily services beginning after Labor Day and extending through Labor Day. For 2017, the services will likely begin shortly before the Fourth of July weekend.

The council meets in its chamber at the Civic Center, 2000 Main St. with a study session at 4 p.m. and the regular session at 6 p.m.
