Kole Calhoun can’t do it alone.
The red-haired Angel outfielder launched two solo home runs Thursday night, but that wasn’t enough as the Halos dropped a 4-2 decision to the Minnesota Twins in Anaheim. It took a triple play and a costly error for the visitors to drop the home team again below .500 at 28-29.
But it wasn’t hitting that ended up turning the tide. The Twins had two singles, got two walks and a key error by first baseman Jefry Marte led to a three-run rally that decided the game.
“You can focus a lot in the ninth inning — obviously, we dropped the popup and we walked a couple guys, but this game was lost in a lot of different ways,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “We had some opportunities, and it’s a shame because Alex pitched a great game.”
Alex Mayer did pitch well, working six innings and giving up just five hits and one run. He struck out four batters and walked two.
J.C. Ramirez (5-3) will make the start for the Angels on Friday against the Twins.
