TOM HOLLAND is new in the title role of “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
The entertainment scene in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area heats up as we head into the heart of summer. Local stages are coming alive, free music concerts are a-blooming and Hollywood is rolling out what it hopes are summer blockbusters. Here’s a look at what’s interesting in the coming weekend.
The big release is “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” It’s got a new lead in Tom Holland, portraying the young superhero back in the old neighborhood. It co-stars Robert Downey, Jr., Marisa Tomei and Michael Keaton. It’s rated PG-13.
ON STAGE
“THE WEDDING SINGER” continues at the Gem Theater in Garden Grove (OMP photo).
Garden Grove is the center of live theatrical activity this time.
- “The Wedding Singer” continues at the Gem Theater on Main Street. Performances are Thursday to Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Production closes on Sunday, July 23.
- “The Tempest” will be in a preview performance on Saturday at the Festival Amphitheater on Main Street by Shakespeare Orange County. Peter Uribe directs; Happy Groener, Marlan Higgins, Hal Landon, Jr. and John Walcutt star. Another set of previews will be staged on July 13-14, with opening night on July 15. Performances begin at 8 p.m.
MUSIC
A pair of free concerts is on tap.
- Garden Grove’s Summer Concert Series stars on Thursday with Stone Soul (classic soul and Motown music) performing in Eastgate Park (west of Valley View, at the western terminus of Chapman) at 6:30 p.m. Other fun stuff including carnival games, airbrush tattoos, obstacle courses and more will commence at 5:30 p.m. There will be food to buy from vendors, including food trucks.
- The Huntington Beach Concert Band’s summer concert series continues with a performance by the Golden West Pops performing in Central Park on Sunday at 5 p.m.
