LA VATION, a U2 tribute band, performs Thursday afternoon in Eastgate Park in Garden Grove.
We are deep into the free summer concert series in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area. Time to pack up your blanket, your cooler and your sunscreen and head to a local park to enjoy some fine music. Here’s the lowdown on that and more entertainment news this weekend.
The lineup of free concerts includes:
- In Garden Grove on Thursday, it’s LA Vation, a U2 tribute band performing at 6:30 p.m. at Eastgate Park in West Garden Grove. In addition, it will be the beginning of the “Voice of Garden Grove” competition for local vocalists. It’s all free and there will be food and drinks to buy.
- In Huntington Beach, the Concert Band’s series continues on Sunday with the Amanda Castro Band, performing updated songs from the Twenties to the present in an upbeat, jazzy style. The show starts at 5 p.m. in the Central Park (Talbert Avenue and Goldenwest Street).
- In Westminster, the series will start next week, with The Hodads doing a Beach Boys tribute performance in the Civic Center at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 20.
On Main Street in Garden Grove on Friday – as part of the Friday Night Car Show – Elvis tribute artist Donovan Chavez – will perform from 5-7 p.m. He will also be doing shows on July 21 and 28.

“THE TEMPEST” comes to Garden Grove’s Festival Amphitheater this week (SOC).

- “The Wedding Singer” continues at the Gem Theater on Main Street. Performances are Thursday to Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Production closes on Sunday, July 23.
- “The Tempest” opens this Saturday at the Festival Amphitheater on Main Street by Shakespeare Orange County. Peter Uribe directs; Harry Groener, Marlan Higgins, Hal Landon, Jr. and John Walcutt star. A set of previews will be staged on July 13-14, with opening night on July 15. Performances begin at 8 p.m.
- “To Kill a Mockingbird” opens Friday at the Huntington Beach Playhouse in its new location at 8251 Heil Ave., Westminster, CA 92683
MOVIES
Opening this week in cinemas are:
- “War for the Planet of the Apes” is the PG-13 action-adventure story of mutant apes versus humans.
- “Wish Upon” is a horror story about a girl who gets a music box which allows her to make wishes which are granted in strange ways. Rated PG-13.
