“VALERIAN and the City of A Thousand Planets” opens this weekend in local cinemas.
Summer is about one-third over, and have you gotten your fair share of entertainment? If not, here are some options for amusement in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area through the weekend.
Opening in local cinemas this week:
- “Dunkirk” is the story of the epic evacuation of 400,000 British troops to England after the disasterous Battle of France in 1940. Christopher Nolan directed. Rated PG-13.
- “Girls Trip” is a ladies buddy film. Four black gal pals take a wild vacation in New Orleans. Stars Regina Hall, Tiffany Haddish, Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah. Rated R.
- “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.” A sci-fi film about two special agents assigned to battle a threat at a huge interstellar metropolis. Rated PG-13.
ON STAGE
Live theater is very much alive in the area this weekend. Including:
- “The Tempest” at the Festival Amphitheatre on Main Street in Garden Grove continues Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. Closes July 29.
- “The Wedding Singer” concludes this weekend at the Gem Theatre on Main Street in Garden Grove with shows Thursday through Sunday.
- “To Kill a Mockingbird” continues at the Huntington Beach Playhouse on Heil Avenue in Westminster through July 30.
- “Damn Yankees” continues at the Rose Center Theater on All American Way in Westminster, with shows Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. this weekend.
MUSIC
Lots of free tunes for you to enjoy.
- Jeri Curl, an 80s-themed band with special tributes to Prince and Michael Jackson, will perform Thursday at the Eastgate Park in West Garden Grove, starting at 6:30 p.m.
- The Hodads will perform surf music at the Civic Center in Westminster on Thursday at 6 p.m.
- The Huntington Beach Concert Band will perform tunes from movies at the Central Park on Sunday at 5 p.m.
