Surfin’ USA comes to Huntington Beach

It will be a wet and wild weekend in the area as Huntington Beach hosts the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing starting on Saturday and continuing through Sunday, Aug. 6. The action around the city pier at Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway will include not just nationally-ranked men and women surfriders, but also top skateboarding and BMX competitions.

There will also be creative workshops, classic games and interactive activities for attendees and admission to all events is free. Among the highlights of the coming events will be the induction on Aug. 3 and 4 into the Surfing Hall of Fame of Bethany Hamilton and Michael “Mick” Fanning.

For those unable to attend in person, the U.S. Open will be webcast live Aug. 6 on VansUSOpenofSurfing.com and WorldSurfLeague.com and on the free WSL app.

And if surfing, skating and riding aren’t your idea of summer fun, here’s what else is cooking, entertainment-wise, in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area this weekend.

MOVIES

Not a lot new this weekend. Here are the two most visible new films.

• “Atomic Blonde” stars Charlize Theron as a super special agent in a Cold War spy thriller. Also starring James McEvoy. Rated R.
• “The Emoji Movie” is an animated take on those little symbols of emotion in your e-mails and Facebook posts. Rated PG.

ON STAGE

• “The Tempest” will wrap up its run at the Festival Amphitheater on Main Street in Garden Grove performances at 8 p.m. by Shakespeare Orange County Thursday through Saturday.
• “Things My Mother Taught Me” continues Friday through Sunday at the Westminster Community Playhouse, 7272 Maple St., in Westminster.
• “Damn Yankees” will conclude its run at the Rose Center Theater, 14140 All American Way, this weekend with shows Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
• “To Kill A Mockingbird” have its final shows at the Huntington Beach Playhouse, 8251 Heil Ave., Westminster, Friday through Sunday.

MUSIC

• The Suffragettes will perform a free concert on Thursday in the Eastgate Park in West Garden Grove starting at 6:30 p.m.
• JB and the Big Circle Riders will perform country music favorites in a free concert in the Westminster Civic Center on Thursday, starting at 6 p.m.
• Jamie Wood and the Good Rockin’ Daddies will perform blues, vintage jazz, swing and boogie-woogie music on Sunday at 5 p.m. in Huntington Beach’s Central Park (Goldenwest Street and Talbert Avenue).
