TWO HUNTINGTON Beach men are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday for a mental health competency hearing.

A mental health competency hearing is being scheduled for Wednesday in connection with two men accused of attacking a Huntington Beach police officer.

Darryl Headrick and Bryce Headrick – father and son, both of Huntington Beach – are scheduled to appear in Central Justice Center in Santa Ana, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s office.

According to the Huntington Beach Police Department, the incident began around 11:20 p.m. on Feb. 9. 2016 in the area of Beach Boulevard and Clay Avenue, when the officer stopped a bicyclist for a violation. While the officer was speaking to the cyclist, the man’s father allegedly came up from behind and hit the policeman in the head with a fist. The officer sought to defend himself with a Taser, but was overpowered by both men, who knocked him to the ground, punching and kicking him in the head, according to the HBPD.

A woman who was in the police vehicle on a ride-along got out of the car and began screaming at the men to stop, which they did and left the area on their bicycles. The officer, a 17-year-veteran of the HBPD, was taken to a local hospital, treated and released for injuries to his head and face.

The father was arrested nearby. The son was arrested several hours later.

They were both booked on charges of attempted murder of a police officer (second degree), assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm and resisting or obstructing a peace officer.
