Five home runs and a five-run lead weren’t enough as the Los Angeles Angels went down to a stunning 9-7 defeat to the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards Friday night.
Manny Machado hit a grand slam home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to cap a seven-RBI performance. His deciding homer was his third round-tripper of the game. A total of 10 home runs were hit in the contest.
The Halos built an early 5-0 lead, but the Orioles kept cutting into the lead so that things stood at 7-5 Angels going into the final frame.
In the ninth, the O’s loaded the bases on two singles and a walk, setting up Machado’s grand slam walk off home run off Keynan Middleton (4-1). It was the second time this season that he hit a grand slam to defeat the Orange County team.
The loss dropped the Angels’ record to 62-60, still in second place in the American League West, but the defeat allowed the Minnesota Twins to move into a tie with them for the second AL wild card spot.
On Saturday the series will continue with J.C. Ramirez (10-10) making the start for the Orange County team.
