Ban on non-medicinal pot sales mulled

A BAN on the sale, distribution and delivery within city limits of non-medical marijuana will be considered by the Huntington Beach City Council on Monday.

A zoning amendment that would ban the sale, distribution and delivery of non-medicinal marijuana within city limits will go before the Huntington Beach City Council when it meets on Monday night.

Ordinance 4137 would exercise the city’s right – under Proposition 64 – to ban such cannabis-related activities. Although California voters approved the sales, cultivation and use of recreational marijuana, the measure also allowed for local governments to opt out of that authorization. City councils in Garden Grove and Westminster have done so.

The city planning commission has approved the amendment, which allows for indoor cultivation of six marijuana plants for personal use, Such activity much be fully-enclosed, not be visible to the general public and emit no odor that could reach adjacent properties.

Also on the agenda for Monday night are:

• a recommendation that a chief operating officer be appointed to direct the activities of the Downtown Improvement District
• an update from the police department on body-worn cameras
• a plan to convert a temporary parking lot in Central Park West (Goldenwest Street and Talbert Avenue) into a permanent parking lot.

The council meets in its chambers at 2000 Main St., (at Yorktown Avenue). A study session is scheduled for 4 p.m., with the public session set for 6 p.m.
