It’s another thin week at the movie theaters, but a full agenda of interesting activities for those of us in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area.
- Gain insight into the history of Huntington Beach as well as the influence of sports on the national character when Historic Wintersburg – a Japanese-American settlement near what is now Warner Avenue and Nichols in Surf City – hosts an outdoor movie night on Saturday at 6 p.m. near the historic Maag farmhouse in Santa Ana. Featured will be a double-header of movies including “Day of Independence,” a film about how Japanese-Americans coped with the deprivations of relocation during World War II by playing baseball. - The annual “Blessing of the Waves” will take place on Sunday on the upper Pier Plaza at the Huntington Beach Municipal Pier at 8:30 a.m. The event is sponsored by the Huntington Beach Interfaith Council and will include appearances and remarks by local civic and faith leaders. Movies: “It” tries to scare up a big box office
- “It,” a film version of the Stephen King thriller. A strange clown haunts little kids. Rated R. Starring Bill Skarsgard.
- “Home Again.” Reese Witherspoon stars in this film about a recently separated woman involved in tangled romantic situation. Also starring Michael Sheen and Candice Bergen. Rated PG-13.
On stage: “Pirates” tries to steal your heart
- “Pirates of Penzance” is back at the Festival Amphitheater on Main Street in Garden Grove. Preview performance are on Thursday (Sept. 7) with the opening on Friday.
