Trojans, Bruins and Mariners post wins

The big schools did fine, but the smaller ones had a rough Saturday of football. In high school games of interest to the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area, Pacifica rolled to another one-sided victory.

In major league baseball, the Angels lost another game and another pitcher, as they were defeated 8-1 by the Seattle Mariners.

Colleges: Trojans and Bruins roll to wins

• UCLA’s Josh Rosen was on fire in Pasadena, as he burned down the University of Hawaii football team with five touchdown passes en route to a 58-23 win for the Bruins (2-0). Rosen threw for 373 yards and had no interceptions. UCLA is back in action next Saturday on the road taking on Memphis (1-0). The Tigers’ scheduled game at the University of Central Florida Saturday was postponed because of weather.
• Sam Darnold of USC (2-0) polished his Heisman Trophy resume with a strong performance on Saturday at the Coliseum. He passed for four touchdowns and 316 yards as the Trojans outlasted the Stanford Cardinal 42-24 in the Pac-12 opener for both teams. Darnold’s only blemishes were two interceptions. The Trojans also showed a strong running game as Ronald Jones and Steven Carr ran for 116 and 119 yards respectively. Next up for USC is another home game on Saturday hosting Texas (1-1).
• Chapman University opened its 2017 season with a 27-12 loss to Linfield at home. The Panthers led 12-10 at the half but couldn’t find the end zone after halftime. Ricky Bautista passed for 162 yards and a touchdown in the loss. Chapman’s next game is on Saturday, Sept. 23 traveling to play Trinity University (0-1) in Texas.
• Golden West College lost on Saturday 20-14 to Riverside City College on the road. Joe Pyle had touchdown runs of 65 and five yards for the Rustlers (1-1). He threw for 176 yards, and ran for 127 more. GWC was hit for 18 penalties costing the team 118 yards. Next up: Chaffey College (1-1) comes to GWC for a 1 p.m. game next Saturday.

Preps: Pacifica flattens Dana Hills

The Pacifica High School Mariners (3-0) are definitely looking like a threat to win the Empire League title this year. On Saturday the M’s rolled past the Dolphins 54-7 in a non-league game at Bolsa Grande High School. The Mariners were led by quarterback Ben Jefferson, who passed for 271 yards and two touchdowns. Not only that, he ran for another 175 yards and four TDs. Next for the M’s is a Friday game at Garden Grove High (1-2).

Angels: Consistently inconsistent in wild card race

If the Los Angeles Angels hope to make it to the post-season as a wild card team, they need to string some wins together. They suffered their second straight loss on Saturday, falling 8-1 to the Mariners in Seattle. They may also have lost pitcher Andrew Heaney, who left the game in the third inning with shoulder tightness. The Halos are 72-70 and two games back in the race for the second American League wild card spot. Parker Bridwell (7-2) will start for the Angels today vs. Seattle.
