UPDATE: Among the wounded in the Las Vegas shooting was Doug Cotter, 48, of Garden Grove. He was struck in the arm, treated at a hospital and released.

Among the 59 people fatally shot by a gunman in Las Vegas late Sunday evening was Carrie Barnette. An employee of Disney’s California Adventure in Anaheim, Barnett was a 2001 graduate of Pacifica High School in Garden Grove.

According to reports, she was close to the front of the stage at a country music concert outside the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel. She was shot in the chest and died at the scene.

Barnette had been employed at the Pacific Wharf Café in California Adventure.

The gunman, identified as Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada, had 23 guns in his hotel room and police found another 19 in his home. In addition to the 59 dead, another 527 were wounded when Paddock – who killed himself – opened fire from his 32nd floor window.

“Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by the tragic events in Las Vegas – the victims of violence, the witnesses, and the friends and families mourning loved ones,” said Disney president and CEO Robert Iger in a statement. “We are especially heartbroken over the loss of one of our own to this unconscionable and senseless act. Carrie Barnette had been a member of the Disney California Adventure culinary team for 10 years and was beloved by her friends and colleagues.”

  1. Doug Cotter has not been released from the hospital. He was separated from his family and was “missing “ for more than 12 agonizing hours. He has had multiple surgeries to remove Shrapnal from his abdomen and to repair his intestines. He remains in intensive care at UMC. He is in stable condition the last time I spoke with his family around 7pm October 2.
