Some people think that much of contemporary entertainment is trash, but this weekend, one of the big local events in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area literally does involve garbage, or at lease the bins to collect it. Here’s a look at the fun stuff to do in the area this weekend.
Opening this weekend in local cinemas are:
- “Blade Runner 2049.” It’s a sequel to Ridley Scott’s classic sci-fi film, this time starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, the latter reprising the role in the 1982 movie. Rated R.
- “The Mountain Between Us.” A plane crash in remote mountains leaves two survivors who must battle the elements to survive. Rated PG-13.
- Also “My Little Pony: The Movie,” an animated children’s film, and “The Stray,” about a dog who comes into the life of a family to help them. Both rated PG.
ON STAGE
- “Cabaret” continues at the Gem Theater on Main Street in Garden Grove with performances Thursdays through Sunday this weekend. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m.
- “Never the Sinner” opens this weekend at the Mainstage Theater at Golden West College in Huntington Beach with performances on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. A dramatization of the Leopold and Leob “thrill killing” murder trials in the 1920s.
EVENTS
The big deal this weekend will be “Dumpsters On Parade” on Saturday morning on Main Street in Huntington Beach. The Huntington Beach Art Alliance has painted art on 30 trash bins to serve the downtown area, and they will be paraded down the last three block of Main (toward the pier) starting at 10 a.m. There will be a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. and an art show from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The collection of canned food for the needy is part of the event.
