Argos rise to 10th in CIF-SS grid poll

GARDEN GROVE HIGH rose to a tie for 10th place in Division 8 football poll this week.

Six area high school football teams are ranked in polls by the CIF-SS in this, the final week of the regular season. Here are squads from the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area that made the Top 10’s as announced on Monday, along with the division’s top-rated team.

  • Division 8: Garden Grove is tied for 10th. Rio Mesa is first.
  • Division 10: Pacifica is third. Apple Valley is first.
  • Division 11: Westminster is fifth. Culver City is first.
  • Division 13: La Quinta is fourth, Orange is fifth and Ocean View is eighth. Santa Clarita Christian is first.

Missing from the Division 3 rankings for the first time is Edison, despite a big win over rival Fountain Valley last week. The Barons are seventh in Division 6. New to the rankings is Garden Grove, riding a four-game winning streak.

In the latest girls’ volleyball poll, Ocean View is sixth in Division 8 and Orangewood Academy is ninth in Division 9. In the cross country poll, Bolsa Grande is 16th in girls’ Division 3 and Ocean View is seventh in the boys’ Division 3.

Ducks outshoot ‘Canes for 4-3 win

Corey Perry scored the winning goal in the shootout and Ryan Miller made 34 saves in his debut in goal as the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Carolina Hurricane 4-3 in Raleigh Sunday night.

The Ducks built a 2-0 lead on scores by Ondrej Kase and Derek Grant, but the hosts rallied with two tallies of their own to tie the score. Justin Faulk gave the ‘Canes a 3-2 lead, but Jakob Silfverberg tied it up for Anaheim at the 15:12 mark of the third period.

Now 6-4-1 (worth 13 points and a tie for third place in the NHL Pacific Division), the Ducks are next in action on Wednesday at Honda Center hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs (7-4)
