Report on short-term rentals on agenda

SHORT-TERM rentals will be a topic of discussion at Tuesday’s meeting of the Garden Grove City Council.

A report on the city’s efforts to combat illegal short-term rentals tops Tuesday’s meeting of the Garden Grove City Council.

The council will discuss the document, which lists enforcement activities against property owners who – contrary to city ordinances – operate as a sort of hotel for tourists. Many of the STRs are located in the northeast area of the city, near the Disney resorts and the Anaheim Convention Center.

According to the report, the city has:

  • mailed written notifications to 3,557 property owners with business tax certificates for residential rentals, reminding that that rental agreements must be for a minimum of 30 days.
  • created an STR complaint form for use in issuing administrative fines against violators
  • identified 35 properties functioning as short-term rentals, of which 22 “appear to be no longer” operating as STRs.
  • issued citations to a total of 68 property owners believed to be operating STRs.

Also on the agenda is an agreement with environmental planners to help clear the way for two more high-rise hotels on Harbor Boulevard.

The council will be asked to pay about $218,000 to two firms to prepare documents to help New Age Garden Grove LLC to meet state and national environmental reviews.

New Age is planning to construct a 560-room Nickelodeon Resort on a 10-acre site at the northwest corner of Harbor Boulevard and Twintree Avenue. The project will include two buildings between 14 and 18 stories tall with 164,000 square feet of retail and resort amenities on the first two floors, and 500 guestrooms and 60 timeshare units above, comprising 600,000 square feet.

The council will meet at 6:30 p.m. in its chambers in the Community Meeting Center, 11300 Stanford Ave.

    • Not for “single-family homes.” Only homeowners associations and apartment complexes have the authority to control the number of residents in a dwelling in our city.
