GARDEN GROVE’S DOG PARK is now open again, after extensive rehabilitation (City of GG photo).

Garden Grove Dog Park, located in Garden Grove Park, is now re-open for public use. Hours of operation are from dawn to dusk, seven days per week.

In early October 2017, Garden Grove Dog Park closed for improvements. Along with new fencing and signage, the park underwent complete turf renovation, the installation of new public benches, dog waste enclosures, and a drinking fountain for owners and pets.

Originally opening in 2009, Garden Grove Dog Park offers canine owners an enclosed area for their pets to play off the leash and with other dogs. The park features separate play areas for large and small breeds.

GGUSD gets its own AP honors

Garden Grove Unified School District was named to the College Board’s Advanced Placement District Honor Roll.  The honor roll is a special recognition for school districts across the nation that increased access to AP courses and maintained or improved the rate that AP students earned scores of 3 or higher on AP exams.  GGUSD is one of only 447 districts to make the list.

The AP District Honor Roll is based on AP data from 2015-2017 and requires that large districts like GGUSD increased participation to AP courses by at least four percent, increased or maintained percentage of minority students taking AP exams and/or scoring a 3 or greater on at least one AP exam, and improved performance levels of AP scores from 2015 to 2017.

GGUSD was highlighted for its AP success among an AP student population in which 30 percent or more are underrepresented minority students and/or students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

The GGUSD serves most of Garden Grove and parts of Anaheim, Cypress, Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, Santa Ana, Stanton and Westminster.

OVSD board selects new officers

New officers have been selected for the Ocean View School District. At its Dec. 11 meeting the board of trustees chose Jack Souders as president, John Briscoe as vice president and Gina Clayton-Tarvin as clerk.

The other board members are Joseph Gaglione and Norm Westwell.

“This is a great honor,” said Souders, “and I am committed to guiding our board on behalf of the students in the Ocean View School District in a collaborative, effective manner.”

The OVSD is a K-8 district primarily serving northern Huntington Beach, but also portions of Fountain Valley, Midway City and Westminster.

Winter fun at Westminster parks

The Parks and Playgroudns Program in Westminster will have extended hours during the winter break. These are at the Bolsa Chica, Liberty and Sigler parks. Hours will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays starting on Tuesday, Dec. 26 and continuing through Friday, Jan. 5.

Offered are free, supervised recreation programs for elementary school-aged children. Activities will include arts and crafts, games, sports and more.
