THE CREATION OF A GROUP to work on ways to curb noise from Long Beach and other area airports was approved at Tuesday’s meeting of the Huntington Beach City Council.

The creation of an Air Traffic Noise Working Group was approved by the Huntington Beach City Council on Tuesday night in an effort to curb noise from Long Beach and other area airports.

Originally proposed by council members Barbara Delgleize and Patrick Brendan, the item was approved on a 7-0 vote. The group will be led by two council members with support from city staff and experts with a first meeting set to be held on or around Jan. 28. The goal of conducting a community meeting within 90 days is also in the proposal, with the project wrapped up within six months.

“There is intense interest in this matter,” said Brendan. He cited instances in which some aircraft – he singled out JetBlue – appeared to be flying too low as they moved across Huntington Beach’s air space.

City leaders have already met with representatives from Newport Beach, a city that was successful in establishing a flight curfew, noise limits and curbs on the number of passengers and departures at John Wayne Airport.

Mayor Pro Tem Erik Peterson told the council that he and Mayor Mike Posey were also pursuing efforts to work with the Federal Aviation Administration on the issue, and moved that the working group proposal be tabled for 30 days so as to not cause a “repetition” of effort. After some discussion he agreed to withdraw his motion and joined the rest of the council in approving the original motion.
