Champs crowned as league play ends

LEAGUE PLAY ended Thursday and the champions of local leagues crowned.

The regular high school basketball season ended Thursday night and the champions have been crowned.

In boys’ action, Garden Grove is the champ of the Garden Grove League, while Newport Harbor triumphed in the Sunset League and Ocean View won in the Golden West League and Cypress in the Empire League.

On the girls’ side, Kennedy is champion of the Empire League, Bolsa Grande of the Garden Grove League, Westminster won the Golden West League and Los Alamitos of the Sunset League.

The top performance of the night for teams serving the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area was by Grove, which got a 43-point performance by Sebastian Castro in its 85-33 rout of Bolsa Grande.

The Argonauts finished 10-0 in their final season in the Garden Grove League (they’ll shift to the Golden West League next year, swapping places with Loara) and 26-1 overall.

Mehkal Harvey scored 25 points for Ocean View as the Seahawks defeated Orange 93-57. OVHS finished league play 10-0, 23-4 overall.

CIF-SS playoff pairings will be announced on Sunday at 1 p.m. Girls’ water polo matchups will be posted on Saturday at 1 a.m. and boys’ and girls’ soccer at 9 and 10 a.m. on Monday.
