High court won’t hear “Dreamers” case

The fate of “Dreamers”– persons brought illegally into the United States as children – will continue to work its way through the lower federal courts as the U.S. Supreme Court decided Monday not to take up the issue immediately.

In the Obama Administration, hundreds of thousands of immigrants were protected from expulsion under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. President Donald Trump announced it would be ended as of March 5, but federal courts in California, New York and elsewhere have blocked that.

As of now, a possible compromise might be worked out in Congress. More immediately, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit would be the next court venue to argue the issue.

Trump “would have run in”; deputy defends conduct

Speaking Monday on the Feb. 14 shootings at a high school in Parkland, Florida, President Donald Trump said he would have intervened in the incident that took the life of 17 people, unarmed or not.

According to the Associated Press, he said, “You don’t know until you’re tested, but I think I really believe I’d run in there even if I didn’t have a weapon, and I think most of the people in this room would have done that, too.”

Former sheriff’s deputy Scot Peterson, who was at the school but didn’t go in, was defended by his attorney, who said that the lawman didn’t enter the campus because he thought the gunfire was coming from outside, rather than within the school.

Peterson resigned from his job after being put on unpaid leave pending an investigation.

San Francisco “hardest-working city” in nation

Which city in the nation has its nose to the grindstone most earnestly? The surprising answer Monday was San Francisco, followed by Fremont, Jersey City, Washington, D.C. and New York City.

The rankings, done by the wallethub.com website, used factors such length of an average workday, percentage employed and other factors.

Several large Orange County cities were evaluated. Anaheim came in at number 21 and Irvine at number 30. Santa Ana was 44th. The survey examined statistics for 116 cities across the U.S.

The “laziest?” Columbus, South Carolina.

U.S.A. finished fast, won nine golds

After a slow start, the U.S. Olympic team at Pyeong Chang in Korea finished with a flourish, grabbing nine gold medals and 23 overall, finishing fourth in the medal count. Ahead of the Americans were teams from Norway (14 gold), Germany (14 gold) and Canada 11.

Team USA won first place in curling, women’s ice hockey, cross country skiing, free-style skiing and snowboarding. The next winter Olympics will be held in Beijing, China Feb. 4-20.
