Ducks and Angels are both red-faced

Now, that was embarrassing.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Anaheim Ducks each suffered red-faced losses on Wednesday, losing to teams that are apparently better than them.

In San Jose, the Sharks completed their sweep of the Ducks, posting a 2-1 win. The Ducks, who were the hottest team in the NHL in the last part of the season, were thoroughly outclassed in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, losing all four games. San Jose will take on the Las Vegas Golden Knights in the second round and the Ducks will stay home.

The Sharks held a 1-0 lead going into the third period, but Andrew Cogliano got the equalizer at the 7:53 mark. However, Tomas Hertl got what proved to be the game-winner at 9:09. Over the four games, the Sharks outscored the Ducks 16-4.

For the Angels, it wasn’t quite as bad as that in their 7-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox in Anaheim. For the second consecutive night the Halos were hammered by what’s probably the best team in baseball, but there’s still plenty of season remaining.

The game was essentially over by the third inning with the Bosox leading 6-0. The boys from Beantown (15-2) would go on to outhit the Angels 14-6. Halo starter Tyler Skaggs, who came into the game with a 2-0 record, was driven from the mound in the third, having given up eight hits and six runs. J.D Martinez led the way for the visitors with four hits, including a home run, a double and two singles. Mike Moreland had three hits and four RBIs, including a home run.

Ian Kinsler had the best day for the Angels with two hits and a walk.

On Thursday, the locals will get a chance to avoid a sweep with Nick Tropeano (1-0) making the start. On Friday, the Angels (13-5) will start hosting the San Francisco Giants (7-10) in a three-game series.
