Simmons shoots down the Astros, 8-7

As far as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are concerned, their favorite song isn’t “Home Sweet Home” as much as it’s “On the Road Again.” On Tuesday night, the Angels won on the road again, defeating the Houston Astros 8-7 at Minute Maid Park and leapfrogging the Astros into first place by a half-game in the American League West race.

In winning their 11th consecutive “away” game, the Halos were led by Andrelton Simmons, who hit two home runs and drove in five runs. His three-run seventh inning home run was the deciding blow, as the Angels (16-8) held off several late rallies from Houston (16-9) to hang on to the win. Mike Trout also continued a hot streak, hitting his 10th home run, best in the majors.

Angel starter Shohei Ohtani impressed in some ways and disappointed in others. He threw 98 pitches and his velocity hit 101 miles and hour, but he gave up six hits and four earned runs over 5.1 innings.  He struck out seven batters but walked five.

The decision went to James Johnson (1-0) and the save to Cam Bedroisian, his first of the season.

The third and final game of the series will be on Wednesday with Nick Tropeano (1-1) making the start for the Angels. Justin Verlander (3-0) will start for the Astros.
