V-ball playoffs on; b-ball, s-ball soon

BOYS’ CIF boys’ volleyball playoffs are underway; baseball and softball races wrap up this week.

The CIF-SS boys’ volleyball playoffs are already underway, with baseball and softball right behind.

In wild card play on Saturday, Garden Grove High swept Hawthorne MSA 3-0 in Division 5 and will visit Avalon on Monday. In D-4, Ocean View bested Eastside 3-2 and will visit Anaheim on Tuesday.

Local teams in the first round on Tuesday will include…

Division 1: Huntington Beach at Laguna Beach; Edison at Tesoro.

Division 3: Paraclete at Bolsa Grande; Kennedy at La Palma.

Division 4: Ocean View at Anaheim.

Division 5: Garden Grove at Avalon.

Baseball races down to the wire

It’s the last week of play for baseball and softball for teams serving the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area. Here are how leagues stand as the final week begins.

Empire League baseball: Pacifica and Cypress are both 8-0, tied for first. They will settle it with games on Tuesday and Thursday.

Empire League softball: With two games to play, Kennedy is 7-1 and Pacifica 6-2. They will clash on Tuesday.

Garden Grove League baseball:  Rancho Alamitos is 12-1 in league, having won 12 in a row. They’ll be champs with La Quinta in second and Garden Grove High second.

Garden Grove League softball: The Argonauts (8-0) have locked up first, with Santiago (5-3), Rancho Alamitos (5-3) and La Quinta (4-4) battling for a playoff spot.

Golden West League baseball: Segerstrom (11-2) is finishing as the champs, with Ocean View (9-4) in second. Orange (4-9) and Westminster (3-10) will bring up the rear.

Golden West League softball: As with baseball, the Jaguars (10-0) are cruising, followed by Ocean View (6-3) and Loara (5-4). Westminster (5-5) and Orange (2-7) follow.

Sunset League baseball: Huntington Beach (12-1) has locked up the pennant, with Edison (6-7) in  fourth and Marina (3-11) in sixth.

Sunset League softball: Huntington Beach and Los Al (both 8-1) are coming down to the wire tied for first. Edison (5-4) and Marina (5-5) battle for third.
