“Tag”: it touches the child in us

JEREMY RENNER and Jon Hamm star in “Tag.”

There’s room for candy and ice cream in every diet and especially so at the cinema. Not every film can be “The Battleship Potemkin” or “Schindler’s List.”

Case is point in “Tag,” a good-natured comedy starring the always-appealing Jon Hamm. It’s a film based on the true-life story of five friends who have kept up a game of tag from grade school well into middle age.

The quintet is Hamm, Jeremy Renner, Jake Johnson, Ed Helms and Hannibal Buress. Despite the efforts of decades, Renner’s character – Jerry Price – has never been tagged.

A Wall Street Journal reporter (Annabelle Wallis) gets wind of the escapade and – pardon the pun – tags along a quest to finally touch Price before his impending wedding.

Of course, there’s a lot of slapstick and pratfalls, along with some redeeming wisdom about the importance of friendship and play. In short, just about 90 minutes of escape, in more ways than one.

“Tag” is rated R for salty language.
