A pause in “Zero Tolerance” policy?

Citing a shortage of facilities, U.S. officials will at least temporarily stop turning migrants crossing the Mexican border with children over to prosecutors.

According to the New York Times and other news outlets, Keenan K. McAleenan, head of the Custom and Border Protection agency, said that a policy to allow adults who break the law should be created so they can be prosecuted “without an extended separation from their children.”

The announcement was made on Monday at a processing center in McAllen, Texas.

Presidential press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, “We’re not changing the policy,” Ms. Sanders said. “We’re simply out of resources.” She expressed that Democrats needed to work with the administration to help reduce the number of people seeking to enter the U.S. illegally.

President Donald Trump has advocated a “zero tolerance” program for those crossing the border without legal status.
