Barn and Book sale set next weekend

No, the barn is not for sale, but …

The fall Barn and Book Sale of the Garden Grove Historical Society will be held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week. It’s at the Stanley Ranch and Museum at 12174 Euclid St. (south of Chapman Avenue, east side of the street) from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

You can buy books (hard cover and paperback), magazines, records, CDs, DVDs, audio tapes, jewelry, collectibles, toys, hobby items, yarn, crafts, sewing items, fabric, small appliances, housewares, clothing, furniture, tools and more.

All proceeds go to benefit Stanley Rancho Museum restoration and development.

New tech director for City of Garden Grove

Anand Rao, an 18-year Garden Grove Information Technology (IT) veteran, began his new position this week as

Information Technology Director for the City of Garden Grove following his appointment by City Manager Scott Stiles.

Rao joined the City of Garden Grove in 2000 as an Information Systems Analyst, from which he became a manager in 2007. His appointment to IT Director, as of Oct. 1, 2018, comes as a result of the retirement of former IT Director Charles Kalil.

He holds a B.S. degree in computer information systems from Cal Poly Pomona; MBA with emphasis in information technology from the UCI; and a project management professional (PMP) certification.

Stanton council meeting cancelled

The Stanton City Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday has been cancelled. The next meeting of the council will be on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Also, because of the Columbus Day holiday, Stanton City Hall will be closed on Monday, Oct. 8. Regular business hours will resume on Tuesday, Oct. 9.

GGUSD issues its annual report

Garden Grove Unified School District this week published its 2018-2019 Annual Report to the community, which highlights the district’s accolades for high academic achievements as well as its areas of continued focus.

In the area of academic success, the report highlights that GGUSD outperformed the county and state in the percentage of students who met and exceeded standards on the California SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) test. GGUSD received a positive ranking on the California School Dashboard, the state’s new online accountability reporting tool.

Additionally, GGUSD was the first and only school district in Orange County named a 2018 California Exemplary District for high academic achievement.

The report also includes key results of the district’s annual survey completed by students, staff, and parents. It shows high satisfaction with school pride, district communication, school culture, and facility improvements, detailing the district’s progress with providing air-conditioning to all schools by 2020, renovating buildings and athletic stadiums, making seismic safety upgrades, and improving classroom technology.
