THE ANAHEIM DUCKS rallied from a 5-1 deficit to defeat the Washington Capitals 6-5 on Sunday.

Now that was some rally.

The Anaheim Ducks didn’t have a rally monkey but nevertheless staged one of the biggest comebacks in team history Sunday night, defeating the Washington Capitals 6-5 in D.C.

After trailing 5-1 at one stage, the Ducks began chipping away with two goals in the second period and three in the third to grab the win. It was their sixth win in seven games and improved their record to 14-10-5 (33 points), putting the Ducks within one point of first place Calgary (16-9-2, 34) in the NHL Pacific Division.

In the decisive third period, Pontus Aberg scored his eighth goal of the season, followed by Hampus Lindholm’s third tally. The winning score came on Aberg’s ninth goal.

John Gibson was yanked from the goalie spot after being hammered for three scores in the first period. Ryan Miller was beaten twice in the second, but was perfect in the third.

“It was definitely looking grim when they put their fifth on the board, but we responded,” Miller said. “You’re going to need these kinds of effort over the course of the season.”

The Ducks are next in action on Wednesday against the Chicago Blackhawks (9-14-3, 23 points)
