Sylvia Mendez to address city council

SYLVIA MENDEZ will address the Westminster City Council Tuesday night (OC Tribune photo).

Sylvia Mendez, plaintiff in the historic Mendez v. Westminster school desegregation case, will make a special presentation on the planned Mendez Memorial Project when the Westminster City Council meets on Tuesday.

That court case led to an end to racial segregation in California schools and was an important precursor to Brown vs. Board of Education, which in 1954 declared “separate but equal” schools to be unconstitutional.

Also on the agenda will be:

• consideration of classification of the new position of community preservation supervisor “to address issues related the blight and to improve the condition of the city’s neighborhoods and commercial corridors”;
• consideration of a mixed-use development including 65 affordable residential units on a two-acre site at 7122-7140 Westminster Blvd.

The council meets in its chambers at 8200 Westminster Blvd. at 7 p.m.
