Oilers, Vaqueros post key baseball wins

HUNTINGTON BEACH and Rancho Alamitos won key baseball games on Friday.

Huntington Beach High’s nationally-ranked baseball team got some strong local competition on Friday, but managed to hang on for the win.

The Oilers (8-2) pushed across a run in the seventh inning to claim a 1-0 victory over Marina (5-4) at the Vikings’ diamond. Josh Hahn pitched six innings for the visitors.

In a key Garden Grove League contest, Rancho Alamitos thumped Bolsa Grande 13-0 at the Matador field. Andy Pham pitched five shutout innings and also starred at the plate, going 3-for-4 and driving in one run.

The Vaqueros improved to 5-4 overall and 3-0 in GGL action. The Mats are 4-2 overall and 1-2 in league play.

In softball play, La Quinta overpowered Orange 19-7 in a non-league contest at the Panther diamond.  Ali Guzman went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Aztecs with three RBIs, while Ryann Nadeau was 3-for-4. She scored three times and drove in two runs.

The visitors blew the game open with a 10-run second inning and the game was stopped after five innings. LQ is now 5-1 overall, while Orange is 0-6.

Also in softball action, Huntington Beach won the opener of the Clovis Leadoff Classic 15-1 over Freedom High. Kelly Ryono went 3-for-3 with two doubles and five runs batted in. The Oilers are off to a 3-0 start.
