Walter “Walt” Donovan, a former city councilman and mayor of Garden Grove, died Saturday at the age of 93 of natural causes.

Donovan was first elected to the city council in 1972 and was chosen as mayor pro tem several times. He served on the council from 1972 to 1988 and was elected mayor in 1988 and 1990.

A graduate of Garden Grove High School, Donovan attended the University of Oregon where he starred on the Ducks’ football team. In addition to his many community involvements, he served with Southern California Edison in community relations.

Mr.Donovan was a very good man,he gave me great advice after helping me prove some not so great management decisions within the GGPD.I moved on and am very grateful for his and Chief kesselors advice.Sometimes,especially back in the eightys it is just better to move on.God bless you sir and I put you in the category of WPD chief connar Collacot as great men!

  2. I recieved a proclamation from Mayor Donovan in 1990 for being the World Armwrestling Champion from Garden Grove.
    This news makes me sad, i recall how awesome Mayor Donovan and the city council treated me that night!
    Prayers and Hugz to Mayor Donovan and his Family!…..Godspeed Mayor Donovan! I’ll never forget the Honor you bestowed upon me!
