The best player in major league baseball is about to become the best-paid.
According to multiple sources – but first reported by ESPN –Mike Trout, the 27-year-old superstar for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, will soon be signed to a 10-year, $430 million contract, which will keep him in Orange County through 2030.
Trout has twice been the American League Most Valuable Player, and finished second several times. He’s an excellent outfielder, hits very well and is a superior base-runner.
He has a career .307 batting average, with 649 runs batted in and 240 home runs. In 2018, he batted .312, hit 39 home runs and knocked in 79 while stealing 24 bases.
In modern baseball stats, the key number is WAR (wins above replacement). That statistic seeks to project how many victories a team would not have if Trout were replaced by an average player. In 2018, he “won” 10.2 games for the Halos and 64.3 games overall during his eight-years with the team.
